More Tips to Overcome Plateaus
If you've read the "
How to
Overcome Plateaus" article, you'd have learnt how you can alter your eating habits to break through
your weight loss plateaus.
But you know what? Sometimes making changes in our diets may not be enough.
So what do you do?
The first step is to stop focusing on the weighing scale too much.
Did you know that you can lose fat without losing any weight at all?
This can happen when you gain muscles, because muscles weigh more than fat.
So take a good look at your body -- are you losing an inch here and there? Are you looking better? More toned? What
about your clothes? Are you finding it easier to fit into them?
Better yet, use a measuring tape to help keep track of your progress.
The second step is to make some simple changes to your exercise routine.
(You do have one, don't you?)
We know exercising is important for everyone, but it is even more important for women over 40 because our metabolism is
not as high as it was in our twenties.
Exercising helps to improve your metabolism and is crucial in helping you to maintain your weight loss.
And if you've stopped losing weight, it's time to alter your training routine to break through the plateau.
Here are some suggested ways you can improve your exercise routine:
1. Change the routine
Your muscles are really good at adapting themselves to your exercise routine. If you keep on doing the same exercises
for a long time, you will find that after a while you won't be getting the same results. The simple trick is to change
your routine regularly. If you've been walking, try swimming instead. Keep your body guessing, and your muscles will work
harder and increase the calories you burn.
2. Change the intensity of your workouts
Even if you are doing the same exercises, you can still get additional benefit by changing the intensity of the
exercise. For example, if you like walking, you can try walking a shorter distance at a quicker pace. Perhaps you
can also change the location and go hiking up a small hill for a change? Try it!
3. Tone up your muscles
Are you doing enough strength training? Muscle is where the fat-burning action is, as muscle cells are where your
calories get "burned" or oxidized. So the more muscle you have, the more power sources you have to break down fat. All
things being equal, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even while sleeping. So work those
muscles!
4. Do it more often
If you are exercising two times a week, try to increase this to three or four times a week. And make sure you're
exercising long enough during each session, okay? 5 sessions a week consisting of 10-minute routines don't count as
having proper "exercise". It needs to be at least 30 minutes each (preferably 45 minutes to an hour) for you to get the
benefits from exercise.
If you use the above tips, you'll find it a lot easier to break through your plateaus and achieve the results you
desire.
And one last thing -- you should actually view hitting a plateau as a good thing.
Why? Because it means your body has less fat to lose, which explains why the weight isn't coming off as readily. And
remember: It's best to lose weight slowly and sensibly so you can make changes that you'll keep for life.
