Chromium Picolinate
Chromium reduces insulin insensitivity, so it helps in blood sugar metabolism by improving insulin's role in the uptake of glucose (blood sugar) by muscle and liver cells. This leads to efficient conversion of glucose into glycogen (the stored form of glucose), rather than converting the excess glucose into fat. This can also contribute to improved energy and endurance.
In one study, researchers found that over a period of 3 months, clinically obese participants given chromium picolinate had improvements in lean body mass compared to those participants who were given a placebo.
In another double-blind, placebo-controlled study, patients who received chromium picolinate had significant gains in lean body mass and decreases in body fat compared to patients receiving a placebo.
Overall, it was concluded that supplementation with chromium picolinate led to significant improvements in body composition.
However, high doses of chromium are reported to be toxic. Safe amounts according to the National Academy of Sciences for chromium are known to be between 50-200 micrograms (mcg) per day.
The most widely available chromium supplements are chromium salts such as chromium polynicotinate, chromium picolinate and various chromium/amino acid chelates - which help increase the absorption and availability compared to isolated chromium salts such as chromium chloride (which has an extremely low gastrointestinal absorption rate). In
simpler terms, chromium in a form such as chromium picolinate is more easily absorbed by your body than plain chromium itself.
